Stained Glass
Monday, March 9th, 2009
Between work and taking care of Ian, there hasn’t been much time for anything else. But my friend Steve and I decided to sign up for a stain glass making class. It’s turned out to be lots of fun. Before starting I knew I’d want a fairly simple project. So I decided to severely simply Van Gogh’s Sunflower painting. It’s always been one of my favorites.
I’m amazed at how many steps there are to making a piece (even a small piece). After getting a pattern, and having three copies (one for keeping, one for cutting, and one for building on), there is cutting the glass, grinding the glass, putting all the pieces together, soldering, applying putty, applying whiting, brushing, and then finally applying a substance that turns the zinc border black. I still have to hang my first piece (which will require a trip to Home Depot for a chain), but all the other steps are completed!
Since there aren’t many weeks left in the class – I’ll be keeping the rest of the items very small (like 7-piece Christmas ornaments).
